Boys and Girls ** (2000, Freddie Prinze Jr, Claire Forlani, Jason Biggs) – Classic Movie Review 1499

1

Director Robert Iscove and star Freddie Prinze Jr re-unite in 2000 after She’s All That (1999), but with slightly less entertaining results.

Shy bookworm Ryan (Prinze Jr) and the outgoing, free-spirited Jennifer (Claire Forlani) couldn’t be more different. So when they first meet, they can’t stand each other and when they re-encounter they still loathe one another.

But when they reconnect in college, all that friction eventually explodes into romantic fireworks. They finally become firm best friends, but then they have sex, and that changes everything.

Thanks to the genuine charm of the leads, this remarkably low-key, unsurprising teen romantic comedy is still quite sweet, quirky and appealing. The love story is a bit Mills and Boon, but it does entertain. Jason Biggs is effortlessly amusing as hero’s friend, he is re-united with his nice American Pie co-star Alyson Hannigan and Amanda Detmer is fun as heroine’s friend.

Cinematographer Ralf D Bode’s nicely lensed San Francisco setting is appealingly used as a lovely backdrop. The screenplay is written by Andrew Lowery and Andrew Miller, credited as The Drews.
