Crossing Delancey **** (1988, Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, Reizl Bozyk, Jeroen Krabbé, Sylvia Miles) – Classic Movie Review 5804

Amy Irving stars as Izzy, a modern single 30-something who lives alone in her smart New York apartment, works in a bookshop and has lots of female friends and a Jewish grandmother who gets the matchmaker to introduce her to a nice Jewish boy.

Joan Micklin Silver directs this appealing, schmaltzy 1988 romantic comedy with the accent on character and relationships in the screenplay written by Susan Sandler, based on her play.

Irving is excellent at the head of a compelling cast, who also include Peter Riegert, Reizl Bozyk, Jeroen Krabbe, Sylvia Miles, George Martin, John Bedford Lloyd, Suzzy Roche, Claudia Silver, David Hyde Pierce, Rosemary Harris, Kathleen Wilhoite and Amy Wright.

The film is soft at the centre but charmingly so, and it also warm and witty.

Roche also sings in The Roches group that performs much of the background music.
