Co-writer/ director Pál Gábor attacks the Hungarian government of the day in his heartfelt tale of the rebellious young woman Vera (Veronika Papp) who tries to survive and prosper in the Stalin-era Hungary of 1948.
Vera complains about insanitary conditions in the hospital where she is working, and she is sent a re-education camp, where she is brainwashed by the party. She falls for a fellow prisoner (Tamás Dunai). Her integrity gone after betraying a co-worker, Vera is elected to a senior rank in the party.
Gábor hands in a confident, dark-toned, hard-edged and significant film from Hungary in 1979, based on the novel by Endre Vészi.
Also in the cast are Erzsi Pásztor, Éva Szabó, László Halász and László Horváth.
