Babycakes ** (1989, Ricki Lake, Craig Sheffer) – Classic Movie Review 11,855

Director Paul Schneider’s 1989 comedy Babycakes is an entirely unnecessary but pleasantly cast and tasty remake for American TV of Percy Adlon’s 1985 German film Sugarbaby [Zuckerbaby], providing a big fat part for Ricki Lake (from Hairspray and Cry-Baby) as a tubby mortuary lady called Grace coming on strong to the young and attractive amateur ice skater Rob (played by the handsome and charming young Craig Sheffer).

Rob catches Grace’s eye at at a local skating rink, and later Grace is riding the subway home when she notices he is a New York City subway train conductor, and she sets out to devise a way to meet him.

Lake was indeed one big fat actress then before her self reinvention as a thin talk show host in the Nineties.

Also in the cast are Nada Despotovich, Paul Benedict, Betty Buckley and John Karlen.

It was released by CBS on Valentine’s Day in 1989, and later aired on Lifetime and the Lifetime Movie Network.

The cast are Ricki Lake as Grace, Craig Sheffer as Rob Harrison, Nada Despotovich as Keri, John Karlen as Al, Betty Buckley as Wanda, Paul Benedict as Magleby, and Cynthia Dale as Olivia.

The talk show Ricki Lake was broadcast from September 1993 to May 2004.
