Co-writer/ producer/ director Howard Brookner’s 1989 Bloodhounds of Broadway stars Matt Dillon, Madonna, Jennifer Grey, Rutger Hauer, Randy Quaid, Julie Hagerty and Esai Morales.
It is a star-studded romantic comedy set in 1920s New York with Madonna vamping like Theda Bara as Hortense Hathaway, winning the heart of small-time crook Regret (Matt Dillon), and Rutger Hauer as a mob boss called The Brain looking for love.
The expensive cast ham it up amusingly in this charming spoof of mobsters and molls, based on Damon Runyon’s short stories, previously made as Bloodhounds of Broadway in 1952.
Bloodhounds of Broadway is Bugsy Malone for adults, light and frothy, with lovely, stylish sets (Linda Conaway-Parsloe is production designer), costumes (Beatrix Aruna Pasztor is head costume designer), photography (Elliot Davis is director of photography) and art direction (Jefferson Sage is art director).
Also in the cast are Anita Morris, Madeleine Potter, Ethan Phillips, Josef Sommer, Tony Azito, Tony Longo, Stephen McHattie, Alan Ruck, Dinah Manoff, David Youse and William Burroughs.
The screenplay is by Howard Brookner and Colman deKay, based on Damon Runyon’s short stories.
Randy Quaid met his second wife Evi Motolanez in December 1987 on the set of Bloodhounds of Broadway, and they wed on 5 October 1989 at the San Ysidro Ranch, Montecito, California, attended by his brother Dennis, his then-wife Meg Ryan, and Randy’s six-year-old daughter Amanda.
