Japanese writer-director-star Takeshi Kitano’s second film (after 1989’s Violent Cop) is a typically quirky take on the Yakuza movie.
As well as writing and directing, he also stars (billed as ‘Beat’ Takeshi) as Uehara, a sadistic renegade gangster, in trouble with the Okinawa Yazuza for embezzlement. Uehara joins forces with a young garage attendant who has tried to slug a swaggering gangster on his forecourt.
Takeshi Kitano’s 1990 movie has all his stylistic flourishes: an eccentric approach to story-telling, frequent moments of offbeat comedy, calm interludes and strange digressions, interrupted by explosions of violence.
Also in the cast are Yûrei Yanagi (as Masahiko Ono), Yuriko Ishida, and Taka Guadalcanal (as Takahito Iguchi).
