Dean Jagger stars as US Customs Department Agent Cliff Holden, who is in hot pursuit of the thieving gem-runners who have murdered his buddy co-worker, in producer-director Joseph Lerner’s breezy, tough-edged, quick-moving realist 1949 B-movie crime thriller.
This slick, moody and modestly effective film noir is above par, boosted above its lowly status by involving turns from Jagger and John Carradine as the doctor left by the bad guys to take the can.
Gerald Hirschfield’s black and white cinematography and Gail Kublik’s music score are eye- catching and ear-catching. And there is capable direction on New York locations from little-known Lerner.
Also in the cast are Lotte Elwen, Rene Paul, Walter Vaughan, Adelaide Klein, Edith Atwater, Joan Eily and Walter Brooke.
It is written by Berne Giler.
