Chris Evans stars and commands the screen as the Marvel Comics character Captain America in director Joe Johnston’s excellent 2011 American superhero film, the first Captain America movie and the fifth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also stars Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L Jackson, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Dominic Cooper, Neal McDonough, Derek Luke, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones and Richard Armitage.

Set mostly in World War Two, the story by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely tells how sickly Brooklyn man Steve Rogers (Evans) takes a dose of a ‘Super-Soldier serum’ and is transformed into super-soldier Captain America to aid in the war effort. Rogers’s quest is to stop Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), Adolf Hitler’s ruthless head of weaponry and the leader of an evil organisation that intends to use the Tesseract artefact as an energy-source for world domination.

The main actors were cast between March and June 2010, production began in June 2010, and filming took place in London, Manchester, Caerwent, and Liverpool in the UK and Los Angeles in the US. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.

Captain America: The First Avenger premiered at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on July 19 2011 and was released in the United States on July 22 2011. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $370 million worldwide.

It is followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), released on April 4 2014, and Captain America: Civil War (2016), released on 29 April 2016 in the UK.

Evans also plays Cap in Avengers Assemble (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and has a cameo in Thor: The Dark World (2013).
