Caro Diario [Dear Diary] **** (1993, Nanni Moretti, Renato Carpentieri) – Classic Movie Review 3054

1

Writer-director Nanni Moretti directs himself playing himself in his witty 1993 ironically wry look at life in three chapters like diary entries with personal stories and reflections.

(1) Moretti travels around Rome on his Vespa, admiring housing projects, admiring Jennifer Beale (he says his favourite movie Flashdance!), and searching for the place on the beach where Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered.

2

(2) Then he goes cruising with his friend around a set of spectacularly shot remote Italian islands and tries in vain to find some peace and do some writing and finish his new film.

(3) And then he searches for a cure for his baffling skin condition, an annoying rash that causes unbearable itching.

It doesn’t sound much, maybe, but it’s enchanting, moving from mildly humorous to hilarious via observant, clever and wise. Moretti won the Best Director award at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.

As well as in Rome, filming took place on Lipari Island, Alicudi Island, Panarea Island, Salina Island and Stromboli Island, all of them Aeolian Islands, Messina, Sicily.

Moretti is also the director of Aprile (1998), The Son’s Room [Il Stanzo di Figlio] (2001) and Mia Madre (2015).
