Charlie Chan in Paris *** (1935, Warner Oland, Mary Brian, Thomas Beck, Erik Rhodes, John Miljan, Keye Luke) Classic Movie Review 8693

Director Lewis Seiler’s 1935 thriller Charlie Chan in Paris is the seventh film produced by the Fox Film Corporation with Warner Oland as Charlie Chan.

‘Hasty conclusion like gunpowder,’ says Chan, ‘tendency to explode.’ Charlie goes to Paris on a case for London bankers and customers who say bonds from the Lamartine Bank are forged. So Chan pursues forged bonds, blackmail and murder in this entertaining but very tall tale that is as unlikely as the Paris atmosphere and the French characters’ American accents. Keye Luke makes his début in the series as Number One Son, Lee Chan.

‘Kindness in heart much better than gold in bank,’ concludes Charlie Chan.

Charlie Chan in Paris was for long thought lost, but it is now available on DVD as part of Twentieth Century Fox Home Video’s Charlie Chan Collection, Vol 1.

Also in the cast are Mary Brian, Thomas Beck, Erik Rhodes, John Miljan, Ruth Peterson, Minor Watson, Murray Kinnell, John Qualen, Henry Kolker, Dorothy Appleby, Lynn Bari, Gino Corrado, Paul McVey, Rolfe Sedan, Herbert Farjeon and Harry Cording.

Charlie Chan in Paris is directed by Lewis Seiler, runs 72 minutes, is made and released by Fox Film Corporation, is written by Edward T Lowe Jr and Stuart Anthony (screenplay) and Philip MacDonald (story), based on the character Charlie Chan created by Earl Derr Biggers, is shot in black and white by Ernest Palmer, is produced by Sol M Wurtzel and John Stone (associate producer), and is scored by Samuel Kaylin.
