Little lad Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) and Chucky the Killer Doll are back for director John Lafia’s 1990 horror sequel Child’s Play 2, a foolish, gruesome follow-up to the sharp 1988 chiller Child’s Play. This time, after all the violence of the 1988 original, Andy is living with his foster parents Joanne and Phil Simpson (Jenny Agutter and Gerrit Graham), and Chucky is reconstructed with a steel head.
As before, the adults don’t believe in Chucky as a monster, but finally troublesome teenager Kyle (Christine Elise) does, as Chucky goes after Andy in a spirit of vengeful homicide.
Though again written by Don Mancini, the trick doesn’t work twice, alas, thanks to the lack of humour, logic and plausibility this time, although the last reel does finally deliver the clichéd, gory horror thrills. The grotesque Chucky is designed by Chris Yagher and Brad Dourif is back doing his voice.
Also in the cast are Grace Zabriskie, Peter Haskell, Beth Grant, Greg Germann and Raymond Singer.
