A local convenience store assistant called Dante Hicks (played by Brian O’Halloran) is forced to open up the premises when his colleague fails to arrive, encountering some oddball customers, his girlfriend and Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson), the clerk from the video shop next-door.
Writer-director Kevin Smith’s 1994 low-budget film is a delightful, laid-back, thoroughly likeable look at the obsessions, love lives and friendships of the clerks who serve behind the counters of neighbouring stores in suburban New Jersey.
It’s an extremely bright, entertaining and highly nifty debut movie, with a talky, funny and dark script, from one of the bright hopes of the Nineties American independent cinema.
Naturally, slacker druggies Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith) also appear, making their hilarious movie debut.
Clerks II appeared in 2006 with the same team. In 2015 Clerks III is in development.
