Dandy Dick ** (1935, Will Hay, Nancy Burne, Esmond Knight) – Classic Movie Review 5827

Will Hay rose to prominence in his fourth film as the gentleman vicar, the Reverend Richard Jedd, falsely accused of racehorse nobbling, in this mild-mannered but still amusing farce adapted from Sir Arthur Wing Pinero’s fine and funny play, which provided Alastair Sim with a top London West End vehicle in the Seventies.

Director William Beaudine’s 1935 film is not exactly dandy or the best possible version of this play, but it is still amiable and inoffensive with strong comic character acting from an impressive comedy cast, including one of Hay’s two later stooges, much loved Moore Marriott.

Also in the cast are Nancy Burne, Esmond Knight, Davy Burnaby, Syd Crossley, Wally Patch, Mignon O’Doherty, Robert Nainby, John Singer and Kathleen Harrison.

Hay and Beaudine collaborate on the script with Frank Miller and Clifford Grey.
