Writer-director Alex Proyas’s extraordinary 1997 sci-fi chiller is a very pleasant surprise. Dark, intense and imaginative, this brilliant looking and exciting movie is excellently crafted by Proyas.
Rufus Sewell stars as John Murdoch, who is trapped in a noirish world somewhere between Raymond Chandler and Franz Kafka, where he’s haunted by his nightmares and pursued by unknown forces.
Great visuals from cinematographer Dariusz Wolski and ideal performances from a fine cast are at the service of a gripping story, imaginatively handled by the director of The Crow, with marvellous sets (George Liddle, Patrick Tatopoulos) and visual effects.
William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O’Brien, Ian Richardson, Bruce Spence and Colin Friels also star.
Running time is irector’s Cut.
Pieces of the set, including those used for the rooftop chase, were sold to the production of The Matrix (1999) after the shoot.
