Dirty Deeds **½ (2003, Bryan Brown, Toni Collette, Sam Neill, John Goodman, Sam Worthington) – Classic Movie Review 4864

Bryan Brown’s crime boss Barry Ryan tackles his angry wife Sharon (Toni Collette), a bent cop named Detective Sergeant Ray Murphy (Sam Neill) and a nasty US crook called Tony Testano (John Goodman) in writer-director David Caesar’s quirky, violent 2003 Aussie crime thriller caper, made à la Quentin Tarantino.

Set in 1973 Sydney, it is very aggressive and strongly violent. But it is made with tasty, offbeat performances, as well lots of style and punchy energy.

Though its heightened film-making style says that it’s only a movie, it is somehow quite credible too, thanks to the convincing, larger-than-life characters the actors forge out of their stereotypes.

Also in the cast are Sam Worthington, Kestie Morassi, William McInnes, Andrew S Gilbert, Garry Waddell, Felix Williamson and Derek Amer.
