David Tomlinson is back as British naval captain Lieutenant Humphrey Fairweather for more navy larks (but without co-star Peter Sellers alas) in director Val Guest’s instant 1958 sequel to Up the Creek, this time with Frankie Howerd co-starring as the bosun who turns the old frigate’s last voyage into a pleasure cruise for paying passengers.
Further Up the Creek is a harmless but tepid comedy with a few funny gags and situations, but mostly the players giving the main cause for a few happy smiles. Shirley Eaton and Thora Hird co-star as Jane Cartwright and Mrs Galloway, while Lionel Jeffries, Lionel Murton, David Lodge, Sam Kydd and John Warren all return from the original.
Also in the cast are Edwin Richfield, Eric Pohlmann, Stanley Unwin, Michael Goodliffe, Patrick Holt, Walter Hudd and John Singer.
It is a remarkably fast same-year sequel: the original was released on 13 May 1958 and this one on 28 October 1958.
Further Up the Creek is directed by Val Guest, runs 91 minutes, is made by Bryon, Henry Halstead Productions and Hammer Films, is released by Columbia, is written by Val Guest, John Warren and Len Heath, is shot by Len Harris, is produced by Henry Halstead and is scored by Stanley Black.
