Let us begin by quoting dialogue from a 2001 episode of TV’s Will and Grace. ‘How bad is it?’ ‘Mariah Carey in Glitter bad!’
Director Vondie Curtis-Hall’s 2001 music drama is a very bad film, but it is good for a few laughs at its expense.
Mariah Carey is completely lost and forlorn as Billie Frank, a singer eager to make it in the world of pop.
But Britain’s Max Beesley comes to the film’s rescue as Julian Dice, Mariah’s love interest, giving an eager-to-please performance that does actually please.
But remember – all that Glitters is not gold.
It is written by Katie Lanier, based on a story by Cheryl L West. As usual, most of the film’s problems start with the screenplay, which is, er, not good.
Also in the cast are Da Brat, Tia Texada, Valarie Pettiford, Ann Magnuson, Terrence Howard, Dorian Harewood, Grant Nickalls, Eric Benét, Padma Lakshmi, Don Ackerman, Ed Sahely, Carmen Wong and James Allodi.
On this day in 2017, 9 August, it is currently the 34th bottom rated movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database, with a vote of 2.2.
It goes straight in the video dump bin with Britney Spears in Crossroads (2002) and Jennifer Lopez in Enough (2002) – a trio of films from hell.
Beesley is also remembered for Anita & Me (2002).
