Godzilla vs Megalon [Gojira tai Megaro] * (1973, Katsuhiko Sasaki, Hiroyuki Kawase, Yutaka Hayashi) – Classic Movie Review 5390

‘GIANT AGAINST GIANT…the ultimate battle.’ In director Jun Fukuda’s 1973 Japanese sci-fi horror action adventure sequel to his 1972 Godzilla versus Gigan [aka Godzilla on Monster Island], Godzilla, the dinosaur with radio-active breath, fights Gigan again, exactly like he did before, and a new foe in the guardian monster Megalon (a giant metal insect beast) with the help of Jet Jaguar, a bright size-shifting robot that grows bigger in battle.

To save on costs, the action takes place in a model desert rather than the traditional model city, though it does feature the Atlantis-like undersea civilization of Seatopia as well. And there are remarkable new low standards in the quality of the making, using stock footage from other movies, and in the dubbing.

It stars Katsuhiko Sasaki as Inventor Goro Ibuki, Hiroyuki Kawase as Rokuro ‘Roku-chan’ Ibuki, Yutaka Hayashi as Hiroshi Jinkawa and Robert Dunham (as Emperor Antonio of Seatopia / motorcycle assailant). Shinji Takagi is Godzilla [Gojira], Kenpachirô Satsuma is Gigan [Gaigan], Hideto Odachi is Megalon [Megaro] and Tsugutoshi Komada is Jet Jaguar [Jetto Jagâ].

It runs 78 minutes, is made by Toho, is written by Jun Fukuda and Shinichi Sekizawa, is shot by Yuzuru Alzawa, and is produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka.
