Graffiti Bridge ** (1990, Prince, Morris Day, Ingrid Chavez, Mavis Staples) – Classic Movie Review 5183

‘Are there really angels, or are they just in our minds? It all comes out in the wash… in time.’ – The Kid.

Writer, director and star Prince follows up his hits Purple Rain (1984) and Under the Cherry Moon (1986) with this explosive 1990 musical story of a clash between nightclub owners, played by Morris Day, Prince and Mavis Staples.

Writer-director Prince’s movie is in fact an unofficial sequel to Purple Rain. Prince plays club owner The Kid, who gets into a fight with rival Morris (Morris Day) for the Glam Slam Nightclub.

Although the 95-minute film looks and plays like an extended, overlong pop video, Prince’s great music and the stunning dancing guarantee a good time and a hit movie. There is a huge number of new 1990 Prince songs, including New Power Generation, The Question Of You, Elephants And Flowers, Round ‘N’ Round, Joy In Repetition, Love Machine, The Latest Fashion, Melody Cool, Number 1, Thieves In The Temple, Still Would Stand All Time and Graffiti Bridge.

And of course it is a must-see for all the many fans of the Artist Formerly Known As Prince. It took $4,500,000 at the US box office and proved his final film role.

Also in the cast are Ingrid Chavez as Aura, Jerome Benton, Jill Jones and George Clinton.

RIP Prince Rogers Nelson (7 June 1958 – 21 April 2016).
