Hilary and Jackie *** (1998, Emily Watson, Rachel Griffiths) – Classic Movie Review 1693

Director Anand Tucker’s 1998 drama is an impeccably acted, quite imaginatively handled version of the true story of the brilliant British cellist Jacqueline du Pré (Emily Watson) and her devoted musician sister Hilary (Rachel Griffiths). In a strong case of sibling rivalry, Hilary is overshadowed by Jacqueline, then has her husband Piers (Rupert Penry-Jones) borrowed by her, before Jackie is struck down by multiple sclerosis and meets an untimely death.

The film is based on the book A Genius in the Family by Hilary and Piers du Pré, so it is hardly objective – and you perhaps even could find its motives dubious. But it is involving, informative, depressing and sometimes very moving indeed. Jackie ‘s husband, Daniel Barenboim (played by James Frain), doesn’t emerge too well in this version, enjoying a double-life affair while she’s ill in London.

Both actresses were Oscar nominated for their lovely performances. Celia Imrie and Charles Dance are very touching as the du Pré parents, and Bill Paterson is excellent as William Pleeth, Jacqueline’s cello teacher. Vernon Dobtcheff plays Professor Bentley.

It is the final film of the graceful Nyree Dawn Porter, as dancer Dame Margot Fonteyn, before her death in April 2001. She is for ever remembered as Irene in TV’s The Forsyte Saga.
