Human Traffic **** (1999, John Simm, Justin Kerrigan, Danny Dyer) – Classic Movie Review 686

The 25-year-old Welshman Justin Kerrigan’s notable, eye-catching writer-director debut in 1999 looked like an industry calling card, but he didn’t make another movie till 2008’s I Know You Know.

John Simm stars and gives a very good account of himself as Jip, one of a group of five intimate friends who spend a booze and drug-filled weekend of clubbing and debauchery in Cardiff, Wales. Vibrant, atmospheric, real, funny and exciting, this is energized, imaginative low-budget movie-making and one of the better Brit films in a busy period for the industry.

The naturalistic acting as well as the music really help to build up the credibility. Justin Kerrigan co-stars as Ziggy Marlon. Lorraine Pilkington (as Lulu), Shaun Parkes (as Koop), Danny Dyer (as Moff) and Jo Brand are also in the cast.

It is alleged that Justin Kerrigan wasn’t involved with the special edition cut of the film for UK DVD called Human Traffic Remixed but instead producer Allan Niblo was. It has new scenes, new CGI effects and new tracks. The US version was edited to remove home-grown cultural references.
