If These Walls Could Talk 2 **** (2000, Vanessa Redgrave, Marian Seldes, Paul Giamatti, Chloë Sevingy, Elizabeth Perkins, Nia Long, Sharon Stone, Ellen DeGeneres) – Classic Movie Review 5033

The follow-up to 1996’s If These Walls Could Talk tells three sincere, affecting and compelling stories of lesbian relationships set in different periods – 1961, 1972 and 2000. Again, the three segments are set in the same house over the period of four decades, but feature different occupants.

A woman finds herself excluded from the funeral of her partner of 50 years. College feminists exclude a militant lesbian student. Rich lesbians want to have a baby via a sperm donor.

The third episode is written and directed by Anne Heche and stars her lover/partner of the time, Ellen DeGeneres, also the film’s co-executive producer.

As Edith Tree in the 1961 segment, Vanessa Redgrave gives a performance that is the film’s standout, and she won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for best supporting actress.

Once again the cast is a major attraction: Chloë Sevingy, Elizabeth Perkins, Nia Long, Sharon Stone, Regina King, Kathy Najimy, Marian Seldes, Paul Giamatti, Natasha Lyonne, Heather McComb, Amy Carlson, Lee Garlington, Mitchell Anderson, George Newbern and Lucinda Jenney.

It runs 95 minutes, is produced by Team Todd, is released by HBO, is written by Sylvia Sichel, Jane Anderson and Anne Heche, is shot by Paul Elliott, Robbie Greenberg and Peter Deming, is produced by Ellen DeGeneres, Suzanne Todd, Jennifer Todd and Mary Kane, is scored by Basil Poledouris and is designed by Nina Ruscio.
