It Should Happen to You ***** (1954, Judy Holliday, Jack Lemmon, Peter Lawford) – Classic Movie Review 5092

Director George Cukor’s 1954 classic comedy stars Judy Holliday as model girl Gladys Glover, who spends $1,000 to advertise herself on a giant New York billboard in her desperate big to get famous – even then they are painting the sign wrong as ‘Gladys Clover’!

It all gets out of hand, as several billboards follow, and then an ad campaign paid for by Evan Adams III (Peter Lawford)’s soap firm. Jack Lemmon plays film-maker Pete Sheppard, who understandably looks on in loving dismay.

It Should Happen to You is a sparky, witty, amusing satirical and romantic comedy from the clever Ruth Gordon – Garson Kanin husband and wife writing team, with the sweet and talented Holliday perfectly paired with the honest-to-goodness young Lemmon (as her neighbour who tries to keep her in check) in his movie début.

The film is simply a total delight from beginning to end.

Constance Bennett, Ilka Chase and Wendy Barrie appear as themselves.

Also in the cast are Michael O’Shea, Vaughn Taylor, Connie Gilchrist, Walter Klavun, Whit Bissell, Melville Cooper, Chick Chandler, Art Gilmore, Jack Kruschen, Stan Malotte, Sandra Lee, Hernert Lytton, Tom Hennessy, Ralph Dumke, Cora Witherspoon, Mary Young, Margaret McWade, John Saxon, Stanley Orr, Frank Nelson, Rex Evans and Robert Berger.

Holliday and Lemmon worked so well together that they were immediately re-teamed for Phffft! in the same year.
