Jack Frost *** (1998, Michael Keaton, Kelly Preston, Joseph Cross) – Classic Movie Review 520

1

Michael Keaton stars as blues singer Jack Frost who is killed in a car crash but, one year later, is reincarnated as a speaking snowman. He now has one last chance to be a better dad to his son Charlie (Joseph Cross). He is after all the world’s coolest dad and so he’s going to prove it to the kid.

Keaton does further damage to his career by delving all too deep in Robin Williams’s sentimental family comedy drama territory. Director Troy Miller’s 1998 treacly little item is not really entirely a heart-melting success, unfortunately, despite all the hard work. A bit more of an edge is sorely needed among all the sugar.

But, nevertheless, Jack Frost is likeable enough as a family movie that appeals to kids and adults. It has its moments, both amusing and touching, and it is lovingly crafted by people who obviously care.

There’s a handsome production, lovely cinematography and there is good special effects work in animatronics from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and visually by Industrial Light & Magic. And at its heart there’s a sterling performance from the always-genial Keaton, who tries all he knows to make the film work and he does manage to remain likeable and amusing.

Kelly Preston has a rather thankless task in a drippy role as the wife, Gabby.

Maybe it’s Christmas, but all these years on your heart begins to warm a little to Jack Frost.

The film opens with the Warner Bros logo covered in snow on a snowy night background and pans down into the concert hall where the Jack Frost Band is playing.
