Director Pierre Granier-Deferre’s 1979 Le Toubib [The Medic] stars Alain Delon as famous surgeon Jean-Marie Desprée, who was left by his wife a month ago, and becomes an army doctor in a movable hospital just before the start of the Third World War.
He has an affair with nurse Harmonie [Harmony] (Véronique Jannot), in this interesting if rather pretentious and unsatisfying French futuristic love story, released on 27 October 1979 but set in June 1983.
Delon tries hard with the tricky material but he is happier in thrillers. However, it is a well-made film. The photography by Claude Renoir and music by Philippe Sarde are classy.
The screenplay by Pierre Granier-Deferre and Pascal Jardin is based on Jean Freustié’s novel Harmony or the Horrors of War.
Also in the cast are Bernard Giraudeau, Francine Bergé, Michel Auclair, Catherine Lachens, Bernard Le Coq, Henri Attal and Jean-Pierre Bacri.
