Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde * (2003, Reese Witherspoon, Sally Field, Luke Wilson, Jennifer Coolidge, Regina King) – Classic Movie Review 5981

Reese Witherspoon returns to overplay her hand in director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld’s lame, stale and mostly tiresome 2003 sequel to the 2001 hit Legally Blonde, with some faintly rancid anti-gay stuff.

Reese is back in the pink as the not-so-dumb blonde Elle Woods, who is now a hot-shot Washington lawyer, working at attorney supremo Sally Field’s practice, where she decides to fight for animal rights when she finds her silly dog’s mom is being tested on.

Witherspoon is fine in her smart and sassy dumb blonde persona, but it is all one note now as a performance and there is no conflict set up in Kate Kondell’s inferior script, as we already know that she is Superblonde without any Achilles heel that could make her vulnerable.

Field, with a lot to do, looks unhappy as the piece’s cardboard villain, and she isn’t an expert at this kind of slapstick. Nobody else has anything much to do and the film just gets dumb and dumberer. It is a mistake to show a clip from the classic Mr Smith Goes to Washington, inviting invidious comparisons. The gay-dog sex stuff is particularly poor.

Also in the cast are Luke Wilson, Jennifer Coolidge, Regina King, Bruce McGill, Dana Ivey, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Jessica Cauffiel, Alanna Ubach, J Barton, Stanley Anderson, Bruce Thomas, Bob Newhart, Ruth Williamson, Jack McGee, Amir Talai, Zia Harris and Sam Pancake.
