Miss You Already **½ (2015, Drew Barrymore, Toni Collette, Dominic Cooper, Paddy Considine, Jacqueline Bisset) Movie Review

1

A warm-hearted romantic comedy drama about a woman dying of cancer? Well that’s a bit of a hard sell. There are plenty of laughs in the film, sometimes polished ones, sometimes crudely constructed ones, but overall it’s very uncomfortable. It’s really just not a subject for comedy. Full stop.

2

Despite the very well-meaning, good-spirited script by Morwenna Banks, attentive direction by Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke and two spunky central performances, this is a troublesome, disturbing occasion. What we see and live through here is just not at all amusing. It’s a tragedy.

3

But Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette are so appealing and talented that the movie manages to keep going successfully. Collette plays the one of two life-long girlfriends who falls ill, testing their friendship.

4

Dominic Cooper and Paddy Considine are miscast and struggling as the husbands. They’d probably have worked better for style and fit in each other’s roles. Jacqueline Bisset does her best to be funny as Mum, but it’s not really her thing.

Jennifer Aniston, then Rachel Weisz were cast, but both dropped out and Drew Barrymore replaced them.
