Monkeybone ***½ (2001, Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, Chris Kattan, Rose McGowan, Dave Foley, Megan Mullally, voice of John Turturro) – Classic Movie Review 2155

1

Director Henry Selick’s 2001 comedy stars an ideally cast Brendan Fraser, who greatly amuses as Stu Miley, a carefree cartoonist who is involved in a freak accident. Then he becomes trapped in a nightmarish world, at the mercy of his creations, especially his popular but treacherous character, Monkeybone..

Jolly live action mixes effortlessly with skilled animation in a tasty, exuberant, classy, underrated fantasy comedy, from the director of The Nightmare before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. Sam Hamm’s screenplay is based on the graphic novel Dark Town by Kaja Blackley. Monkeybone may not be perfect, but it is thoroughly likeable, inventive and enjoyable.

Bridget Fonda (as Dr Julie McElroy) and John Turturro (providing the voice of Monkeybone) co-star. Also in the cast are Chris Kattan, Giancarlo Esposito, Rose McGowan, Whoopi Goldberg (as Death), Dave Foley, Megan Mullally, Lisa Zane, Sandra Thigpen, Chris Hogan and Ted Rooney.

Henry Selick is also the director of The Nightmare before Christmas (1993), James and the Giant Peach (1996) and Coraline (2009).
