Moon **** (2009, Sam Rockwell) – Classic Movie Review 3284

1

Sam Rockwell stars as lonely astronaut Sam Bell , who is over the moon when his three-year job there is over and he’s to be reunited with his wife and young daughter. He’s being looked after by a talking computer called Gerty (voice of Kevin Spacey), but soon there’s a couple a clones of him and he’s playing ping-pong with one of them.

Plundering ideas from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the 1972 sci-fi Silent Running, co-writer/director Duncan Jones’s arty little 2009 sci-fi movie is a bit of a teasing puzzle, which some may find frustrating. But, giving it his all, Rockwell is great, and Spacey makes a real character out of just his (rather creepy) HAL-type voice.

And the dazzlingly achieved (on a low indie film budget) movie looks brilliant, both with its incredibly ‘realistic’ moonscapes, the lovingly crafted effects and the gleaming-white spacecraft interiors.
