Director Stan Dragoti’s 1983 comedy Mr Mom is a most enjoyable variation on the familiar comic theme of wife going out to work when her husband gets fired and dad learning the perils of domestic chores. The likeable stars Michael Keaton and Teri Garr lift it well above the average TV sitcom.
Keaton scores strongly with an understated style as the Mr Mum who has to cope with a bawling baby, rampaging domestic appliances and an amorous neighbour. Garr is amusingly frenzied as Mrs Mum, and there is fine support from Frederick Koehler, Martin Mull, Ann Jillian, Christopher Lloyd, Graham Jarvis, Jeffrey Tambor and Taliesin Jaffe.
Perhaps best of all, it is inventively written by John Hughes (Uncle Buck, Home Alone) and it gets lively direction by Dragoti, so it is actually funny most of the time, as well as appealing.
