One Fine Day **** (1996, George Clooney, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mae Whitman, Alex D Linz, Charles Durning) – Classic Movie Review 5366

George Clooney stars as pressurised New York newspaper columnist Jack Taylor, who meets frenzied architectural designer Melanie Parker (Michelle Pfeiffer). But at first they are both way too busy with their jobs and looking after their kids (Mae Whitman as Maggie Taylor, Alex D Linz as Sammy Parker) to have time for each other on one fine hectic, stressful day in New York City.

Adorable stars Clooney and Pfeiffer are effortlessly funny and super together in director Michael Hoffman’s very appealing and amusing 1996 romantic comedy. They really inhabit their characters and give the impression of being perfectly made for each other.

A few shaky scenes and duff patches of dialogue in Terrel Seltzer and Ellen Simon’s otherwise bright, engaging and witty screenplay remind us that this would have been even better in Hollywood’s golden era. But this, for now, is about as good as it gets.

It co-stars Charles Durning, Joe Robin Baitz, Ellen Greene, Pete Hamill, Joe Grifasi and Anna Maria Horsford.

Also in the cast are Gregory Jbara, Sheila Kelley, Barry Kivel, Robert Klein, George Martin, Michael Massee, Amanda Peet, Bitty Schram, Holland Taylor, Rachel York, Marianne Muellerleile and Steven Jang.

James Newton Howard, Allan Dennis Rich, and Jud Friedman’s song ‘For the First Time’ is performed by Kenny Loggins and was Oscar and Golden Globe nominated.

Natalie Merchant performs the vintage song ‘One Fine Day’ by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, and so do the original singers The Chiffons.
