One Hour Photo **** (2002, Robin Williams) – Classic Movie Review 704

Writer-director Mark Romanek’s eerie, flesh-tingling 2002 thriller is a first rate tension ride. It is, exactly as it was intended, uniquely disturbing and deeply unsettling.

After Insomnia, Robin Williams gives another brilliant non-comedy performance as a true weirdo – a suburban shopping mall’s lonely one-hour-photo technician guy called Sy Parrish– who gets dangerously obsessed with an apparently perfect family he adores and whose pictures he develops.

The pot bubbles over when Williams is fired and finds photos showing that the husband, Michael Vartan, is enjoying an affair and cheating on the wife, Connie Nielsen.

This dark and distinguished psychological thriller is creepy and compelling all the way.

Tragically dear Robin Williams was found dead in his home in Tiburon, California, on Monday August 11 2014, aged 63. The cause of death is believed to be suicide via asphyxiation. He had been battling depression and recently entered 12-step rehab for drug abuse.  He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1997 for Good Will Hunting, and won two Emmys, four Golden Globes, five Grammys and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Mrs Doubtfire (1993)was perhaps his most enduring character. He was gearing up to reprise his role in a sequel.
