Director Wallace Fox’s 1935 Western film Powdersmoke Range is based on a novel by William Colt MacDonald, and stars Harry Carey Sr, Hoot Gibson, Bob Steele, Tom Tyler, and Guinn ‘Big Boy’ Williams.
RKO studios rounded up a remarkable all-star cowboy cast for this well-done, if minor all-action oater, the first to feature William Colt MacDonald’s Three Mesquiteers.
The story is Western business as usual, the action is routine and the handling is ordinary, but the film is still well worth a look for the old Western stalwarts.
Carey Sr and Gibson star as Tucson Smith and Stony Brooke, with Williams as Lullaby Joslin, Tyler as Sundown Saunders and Steele as the Guadalupe Kid.
Carey Sr, Gibson and Tyler reunited for The Last Outlaw in 1936.
Also in the cast are William Desmond, William Farnum, Franklyn Farnum, Patricia Mallory, Ray Mayer, Sam Hardy, Adrian Morris, Buzz Barton, Wally Wales, Art Mix, Jay Wiley, Buddy Rossevelt, Ethan Laidlaw, Eddie Dunn, Irving Bacon, Barney Furey, and Henry Roquemore.
