Writer-director Michael Powell returns to Foula, one of the Shetland Isles, scene of his 1937 film The Edge of the World, along with its star John Laurie and a few other surviving members of the original cast and crew, for his 1978 documentary Return to the Edge of the World.
‘The scheme was to bind the old classic black and white film between coloured covers, adding a prologue and an epilogue,’ said Powell.
The two layers of the original film about the island’s hard life and the 1970s reunion make this doubly fascinating and poignant, particularly now that Powell and Laurie are both dead.
Return to the Edge of the World is directed by Michael Powell, runs 90 minutes, is made by Poseidon and BBC, is written by Michael Powell, shot by Brian Mitchison, produced by Michael Powell and Sydney Streeter, and scored by Brian Easdale.
