Rigor Mortis [Geung si] *** (2013, Anthony Chan, Siu-Ho Chin, Fat Chung) – Movie Review

1

A whole eerie supernatural world of spooks is unleashed as a creepy, semi-dilapidated Hong Kong public housing tower block is plunged into nightmarish chaos when a depressed actor (Siu-Ho Chin) takes a grungy flat there to commit suicide.

2

Writer-producer Juno Mak makes his feature debut as director in this crazy, chilling Asian horror movie just bursting with scary action and flashy special effects, all well and excitingly staged in a visual overload.

3

As the occupants of the tower block include the living, the dead and the undead, along with ghosts, vampires and zombies, there’s enough going on for a trilogy of Rigor Mortis movies.

4

Rigor Mortis is a homage to the classic Chinese vampire movies of the 198os, particularly the classic Mr Vampire series, even reuniting some of the original cast members, so low-key dark comedy mixes with much gross splatter. It’s all effectively judged and the 103 minutes goes racing by.

Anthony Chan, Kara Hui and Fat Chung also star.
