Salome Where She Danced *** (1945, Yvonne De Carlo, Rod Cameron, Albert Dekker, David Bruce, Walter Slezak) – Classic Movie Review 7125

In the original story by Michael J Phillips, gorgeous Yvonne De Carlo plays a Viennese exotic dancer, Salome, who, during the Franco-Prussian War, escapes from Austria to America because she is suspected of being a spy, with the help of an American journalist (Rod Cameron).

In California, she attracts the attentions of Dimitrioff (Walter Slezak), an amorous Russian, who creates San Francisco’s new opera house for her.

Acting-wise, De Carlo’s tongue seems to be firmly planted in her cheek, which is just the place for it, in director Charles Lamont’s amusingly silly 1945 film. It is good that it is hard to know if the laughs are intentional or not.

Salome Where She Danced is a good-looking film with a most handsome production shot by Hal Mohr and W Howard Green in splendidly unreal Technicolor.

Also in the cast are Albert Dekker, David Bruce, Walter Slezak, Marjorie Rambeau, J Edward Bromberg, Kurt Katch, John Litel, Abner Biberman, Arthur Hohl, Nestor Paiva, Gavin Muir, Joseph Haworth, Matt McHugh, Eddie Dunn, Charles McAvoy and Al Ferguson.

Salome Where She Danced is directed by Charles Lamont, runs 90 minutes, is made by Walter Wanger Productions and Universal Pictures, is released by Universal Pictures, is written by Laurence Stallings, based on an original story by Michael J Phillips, is shot by Hal Mohr and W Howard Greene, is produced by Walter Wanger and Alexander Golitzen (associate producer), is scored by Edward Ward and is designed by Alexander Golitzen and John B Goodman.
