She’s Out of Control ** (1989, Tony Danza, Catherine Hicks, Ami Dolenz, Wallace Shawn) – Classic Movie Review 7984

Director Stan Dragoti’s 1989 comedy She’s Out of Control stars Tony Danza as a widower called Doug Simpson who is having trouble coming to terms with the budding sexuality of his daughter, the 15 year-old Katie (Ami Dolenz, whose actual father is Mickey of The Monkees), after she has a makeover, but his fiancée Janet (Catherine Hicks) tries to educate him about a young woman’s emotional needs.

Talented comedy director Dragoti’s genial, undemanding conveyor-belt comedy plays like a pilot for a TV series, and the results are not too bad, with some amusing moments.

The writing in Seth Winston and Michael J Nathanson’s screenplay is quite pleasant enough in terms of characters, situations and gags. But, alas, the likeable and amusing Danza does not quite show the movie star quality or range that could have carried the film on to comedy triumph or his career to big-screen success.

Also in the cast are Wallace Shawn, Dick O’Neill, Laura Mooney, Derek McGrath, Dana Ashbrook, Matthew Perry, Lance Wilson-White, Marcie Barkin and Diana Barrows.

Ami Dolenz was actually 20 at the time.
