Hilarious, inventive and truly inspired, Shrek 2 (2004) is that rarest of gems, a sequel that’s even better than a very fine original, Shrek (2001).
Cartoon ogre Shrek and his new bride, Princess Fiona, visit her parents in the Land of Far Far Away, escorted by the fast-talking Donkey. But the King and Queen are shocked and the evil Fairy Godmother plots to hitch Fiona to her own son, Prince Charming. Mike Myers is back as the voice of Shrek, with Eddie Murphy as the Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Fiona.
But, this time, they have huge competition from the inimitable tones of John Cleese and Julie Andrews as the royals, Rupert Everett as the Prince and Jennifer Saunders as the Fairy. Even so, this super show is stolen by Antonio Banderas’s Puss in Boots, a hysterical send-up of that actor’s character in the Mask of Zorro.
There’s such an avalanche of jokes – all of them hilarious – that you’ll want to see it again and again.
Co-directors Andrew Adamson, Kelly Ashbury and Cody Cameron provide the voices of Captain of the Guards, and of Page, Elf, Nobleman and Nobleman’s Son and of Pinocchio and the Three Pigs.
One new song: ‘I Need Some Sleep’ by Mark Everett.
The British U certificate is a cut version. Suggestive content and crude humour.
Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010) followed.
