Sin City A Dame to Kill For **** (2014, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Eva Green) – Movie Review

1

Taking hard boiled to the max, the amazing Sin City A Dame to Die For is extremely nasty but very nice. Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite from the 2005 original to bring Miller’s Sin City graphic novels back to the screen, weaving together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales.

As the femme fatale Ava, Eva Green is an awesome, and so, in a very different way is Powers Boothe as the main villain, Senator Roark. Josh Brolin, whose character Dwight McCarthy falls fatally for Ava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the young car sharp Johnny who gets on the wrong side of Roark and Jessica Alba as the returning vengeful Nancy are ideal as the heroes of their stories. A virtually unrecognisable Mickey Rourke is effective as top-billed uber-tough guy hero Marv.

Sin City finds ample room for a lot of old guys to do great work. That, the spoofy Chandler-style dialogue, tone and atmosphere, and the stunning visuals, with brilliant, proper use of CGI and 3D, all combine to make it an astounding pulp masterwork.

Rosario Dawson, Bruce Willis, Dennis Haysbert, Ray Liotta, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Christopher Lloyd, Jaime King, Juno Temple and Lady Gaga are also essential ingredients in the acting mix. The full on-screen title is Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Rated R for strong brutal stylized violence throughout, sexual content, nudity and brief drug use.

Johnny Depp turned down the role of Johnny due to scheduling conflicts and Joseph Gordon-Levitt turned down Guardians of the Galaxy and Godzilla to replace him.

Brolin takes over from Clive Owen who was Dwight McCarthy in the 2005 original before the character had plastic surgery to change his face that Brittany Murphy’s Shellie mentions in Sin City.
