Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country *** (1991, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, David Warner, Christopher Plummer) – Classic Movie Review 1923

1

Director Nicholas Meyer returns to the helm in 1991 for the engaging sixth movie that supposedly was to be last ever episode.

In the story, Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the Enterprise escort the Klingon leader Gorkon (a returning David Warner) to Earth for peace talks after their moon Plaxus has exploded leaving their planet just 50 years before extinction.

2

Star Trek VI is a neat détente-era episode with enough action and a playful sense of humour, plus lots of Shakespearean references to give it an air of quality. The old crew are still remarkably shipshape, though some of their thunder is stolen by David Warner and Christopher Plummer (as General Chan), both of them enjoying themselves enormously in over-the-top fun as the possibly untrustworthy Klingons.

3

The movie is painstakingly and lovingly helmed by director Meyer (also responsible for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) and carefully written by him and Denny Martin Flinn. Leonard Nimoy (also playing Mr Spock of course) is the other guiding spirit behind this episode as co-author of the story and one of the executive producers.

DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, George Takei and Nichelle Nichols are of course once again also aboard the Enterprise. Also in the cast are Christian Slater, Kim Cattrall, Mark Lenard, Grace Lee Whitney, John Schuck, Brock Peters, Kurtwood Smith, Iman, Leon Russom, Rosanna DeSoto, Michael Dorn, Paul Rossilli, Robert Easton and Clifford Shegog.

Star Trek: Generations (1994) followed. Star Trek was successfully rebooted in 2009, with a sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, in 2013.
