The Cosmic Man ** (1959, John Carradine, Bruce Bennett, Angela Greene, Paul Langton, Scotty Morrow, Lyn Osborn) – Classic Movie Review 3737

5

John Carradine stars as the Cosmic Man, an extra-terrestrial who appears in ultra-cheap negative photography visual effects – and disappears again at will – to spread his gospel of peace and love to understandably utterly astonished Earthlings.

1

The Cosmic Man flies into a California canyon by what looks like an over-sized golf ball, and is easily mistaken for normal when he dons dark glasses, overcoat and hat. The US Air Force arrive on the scene to investigate, but no one seems to know quite what to do with him. With all this dithering, it is lucky that the spherical UFO proves to contain only one alien visitor!

Director Herbert S Greene’s 1959 Sci-Fi movie is not too bad, considering, even though it is impressively low on budget and short on action. Bruce Bennett stars as physicist Dr Karl Sorenson, the Earth scientist who almost alone supports Carradine’s Cosmic Man mission.

Cosmic Man takes a room at Kathy Grant (Angela Greene)’s mountain lodge, the investigators’ headquarters. Sorenson thinks the Cosmic Man is benevolent, but Colonel Matthews (Paul Langton) thinks differently.

Also in the cast are Scotty Morrow, Lyn Osborn, Walter Maslow, Herbert Lytton, Ken Clayton, Alan Wells, Harry Fleer, John Erman, Dwight Brooks and Hal Torey.

Available on DVD with The Flying Saucer and Stranger from Venus.
