The Enforcer ** (1976, Clint Eastwood, Tyne Daly, Harry Guardino, Bradford Dillman) – Classic Movie Review 3810
Director James Fargo’s mechanical, violent, drearily plotted and slackly handled 1976 police thriller is not much above routine, though the admirable star team of Clint Eastwood and Tyne Daly, with their amusing rapport and repartee, manage to keep it moving.
Clint Eastwood is back for the third Dirty Harry movie that shows the series in decline, after Dirty Harry (1971) and Magnum Force (1973). This time the disgraced renegade Inspector Harry Callahan (Eastwood) of San Francisco’s police department is reinstated and chases a teenage gang of psychotic terrorists who snatch the city’s mayor.
Callahan has to work – very reluctantly – with the help of tough partner Kate Moore, played by a very feisty and effective Tyne Daly, later star of TV’s Cagney and Lacy. A woman helping Harry out? Harry isn’t wild about that!
Also in the cast are Harry Guardino as Lieutenant Bressler, Bradford Dillman as Captain McKay, John Mitchum as DiGeorgio, DeVeren Bookwalter, John Crawford, Jocelyn Jones, Nick Pellegrino, Robert Hoy, Samantha Doane and Albert Popwell.
Will MacMillan who plays Lieutenant Dobbs died on aged 71.
