The Fall **** (2006, Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru, Justine Waddell) – Classic Movie Review 3829

Director Tarsem Singh’s astounding, wildly imaginative art movie stars Lee Pace as an injured stuntman in a 1920s Los Angeles hospital, who tells another patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a story about five mythical heroes.

Rarely has a film looked so much like a majestic artwork. It is filmed across the world on the most incredible-looking locations. And it works on the mind, too, as a reflection on the theme of falling. Be amazed, be very very amazed.

Inspired director Tarsem Singh (atoning for his previous film, the 2000 J-Lo vehicle The Cell) won the Best Film award at the Sitges Film Festival and the Crystal Bear for Best Feature at the Berlin Film Festival, while Colin Watkinson won the Best Cinematography award from the Austin Film Critics.

But these are shamefully minor awards for such a masterpiece.
