Director William Beaudine’s 1948 thriller The Golden Eye [Charlie Chan and the Golden Eye] stars Roland Winters in his fourth appearance as Charlie Chan in a weak, sluggish and unsatisfying Charlie Chan mystery.
Chinese sleuth Chan (Winters) and Number Two Son Tommy Chan (Victor Sen Yung), with the help of Birmingham Brown (Mantan Moreland), are on the trail of the perpetrator of a Western gold-mine smuggling scam.
Also in the cast are Tim Ryan, Wanda McKay, Bruce Kellogg, Evelyn Brent, Ralph Dunn, Forrest Taylor and Lois Austin.
The Golden Eye [Charlie Chan and the Golden Eye] is directed by William Beaudine, runs 69 minutes, is made and released by Monogram Pictures, is written by W Scott Darling, is shot in black and white by William Sickner, is produced by James S Burkett and is scored by Edward J Kay.
The 45th of 47 Charlie Chan movies, it follows The Shanghai Chest (1948) and is followed by The Feathered Serpent (1948) and finally The Sky Dragon (1949). Just two more to go!
Charlie Chan’s car in the film is a 1947 Hudson convertible. The Golden Eye features the second of Tim Ryan’s three appearances as Lieutenant Mike Ruark.
Roland Winters made his debut as Charlie Chan in The Chinese Ring (1947), starring in six movies. He took over as Charlie Chan after cancer-stricken Sidney Toler’s final film, The Trap (1946).
These are The Charlie Chan movies.
