The Overnight **** (2015, Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling, Judith Godrèche) – Movie Review

1

Writer-director Patrick Brice’s provocative adult comedy is a very saucy and amusing American indie with four fun star performances. Playing a bunch of weird characters, Jason Schwartzman and Adam Scott are both, er, very full on and infectiously funny, Taylor Schilling gives a standout, subtle performance and Judith Godrèche is a picture of sexy beauty.

Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling star as Alex and Emily, a thirtysomething married couple with a young son, RJ (R J Hermes), who are newly arrived from Seattle in Los Angeles and know no one. A chance meeting in the park introduces them to the mysterious, oddball Kurt (Jason Schwartzman).

Kurt invites the couple and their kid to his house to meet his wife Charlotte (Judith Godrèche) and their son Max (Max Moritt). Much later, with the kids packed off into bed, the play date becomes increasingly strange and interesting as the night goes on into day.

Maybe you have to like the style of American independent movie-making, but for those who do, this could be a treat. It’s produced by Jay and Mark Duplass. Just a little warning, it is rated R for strong sexuality, graphic nudity, language and drug use.
