Director Mikhail K Kalatozov’s Italian-Russian 1969 film The Red Tent [Krasnaya palatka] [La Tenda Rossa] is an engrossing adventure saga based on General Nobile’s 1928 disastrous Arctic expedition aboard the airship Italia.
It is packed full of suspense and action-packed fights against the elements, with good stars working to sterling effect.
[Spoiler alert] Peter Finch and Sean Connery grab the attention as, respectively, General Nobile and Roald Amundsen, the explorer who gives his life looking for the missing Nobile.
It also stars Hardy Kruger as Lundborg, Claudia Cardinale as Valeria, Mario Adorf as Biagi and Massimo Girotti as Romagna.
Also in the cast are Luigi Vannucchi, Eduard Martsevich [Edward Marzevic], Grigoriy Gay [Grigori Gaj], Nicolai Ivanov, Boris Khmelnitskiy, Yuriy Solomin, Yuriy Vizbor, Donatas Banionis, Otar Koberidze and Nikita Mikhalkov.
The screenplay is by Ennio De Concini and Richard DeLong Adams, based on an original screenplay by Yuriy Nagibin, with uncredited writer contributions by Robert Bolt, Alberto Cavallone and Mikhail Kalatozov.
