The Run of the Country *** (1995, Albert Finney, Matt Keeslar, Victoria Smurfit) – Classic Movie Review 4932

Matt Keeslar plays Danny, a rebellious teenage boy who is having trouble with his father (Albert Finney), a short tempered Irish rural policeman, in director Peter Yates’s well-crafted, sincere, heart-tugging 1995 slice of Irish baloney. Things go from bad to worse when Danny falls for the ‘wrong’ girl, Annagh (Victoria Smurfit)).

Based on the novel by Shane Connaughton, and scripted by him, it is a small but quite appealing film, and it is made by people who clearly care about its little story.

It helps a lot that Finney and Keeslar are charming.

It runs 109 minutes, was made by 129 Productions and Castle Rock, released by Columbia Pictures, shot by Mike Southon, produced by Ruth Boswell and Peter Yates, scored by Cynthia Miller and designed by Mark Geraghty.

Also in the cast are Anthony Brohy, David Kelly, Dearbhla Molloy, Carole Nimmons, Vinnie McCabe, Kevin Murphy and Michael O’Reilly.

It is rated R for a strong sex scene and some language.
