The Tall Men *** (1955, Clark Gable, Jane Russell, Robert Ryan, Cameron Mitchell) – Classic Movie Review 5496

Director Raoul Walsh’s gutsy 1955 Western The Tall Men boasts excellent star power with the on-form cast of Clark Gable, Jane Russell, Robert Ryan and Cameron Mitchell, as well as liberal doses of action, romance and humour,

Gable and Mitchell play Texan brothers Colonel Ben Allison and Clint Allison, who work for shady operator Nathan Stark (Ryan). They drive his cattle to Montana, fight Indians and bandits and save the lovely Nella Turner (Jane Russell) from warring Native Americans. Ben and Nella then start a thing, but she isn’t sure of him.

It is all in safe hands with director Walsh, gainfully employing his strong cast, and relishing filming on great landscapes in CinemaScope widescreen and beautiful De Luxe color, shot by Leo F Tover.

The Tall Men runs 122 minutes, is made by 20th Century Fox, is written by Sidney Boehm and Frank S Nugent, based on the novel by Clay Fisher (aka Heck Allen), is produced by William A Bacher and William B Hawks, is scored by Victor Young, and is set designed by Lyle R Wheeler and Mark-Lee Kirk.

Also in the cast are Juan Garcia, Harry Shannon, Emile Meyer, Mae Marsh, Steve Darrell, Robert Adler, Argentina Brunetti, Will Wright, Tom Wilson, Dan White, J Lewis Smith, Russell Simpson, Chuck Roberson, Meyito Pulito, Post Park, Jack Mather, Frank Leyva, Doris Kemper, Carl Harbaugh, Gertrude Granor, Tom Fadden and Gabrielle Del Valle.
