Tin Cup **** (1996, Kevin Costner, Rene Russo, Don Johnson, Cheech Marin) – Classic Movie Review 2688

1

Director Ron Shelton’s 1996 sports drama stars a still-in-his-prime Kevin Costner as troubled, ageing golf pro Roy ‘Tin Cup’ McAvoy, who gets back into the swing when sassy shrink Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) putts into his life.

This laid-back romantic and sports comedy, masterminded by this genre’s expert, co-writer/director Shelton, is quite simply one of Costner’s very best films. It is a totally neglected and underrated gem, with sparkling performances from the two stars. And there is a show-stopping performance from Don Johnson, as Costner’s smug and creepy rival, David Simm, plus, Cheech Marin is funny as Romeo Posar.

Tin Cup is working at a driving range, but tries to qualify for the US Open to win the heart of Molly, the girlfriend of successful Simm.

Also in the cast are Linda Hart, Dennis Burkley, Rex Linn, Lou Myers, Richard Lineback, George Perez, Mickey Jones and Michael Milhoan. Ron Shelton writes with John Norville.
