Director Robert Wise’s stirring 1950 Western Two Flags West, based on a true incident that was also used in Major Dundee (1965), is splendidly acted, especially by Joseph Cotten, Jeff Chandler, Linda Darnell, Cornel Wilde, Dale Robertson, Jay C Flippen and Noah Beery Jr, and tautly made with lots of thought and imagination.
Cotten stars as Colonel Clay Tucker, whose Confederate soldiers are to be freed if they accept the offer of an officer, Captain Mark Bradford (Wilde), to help the Union army against the Native Americans.
Chandler plays Major Henry Kenniston, their mixed-up Cavalry commandant in New Mexico, who hates rebels and loves his sister-in-law, Elena (Darnell).
Producer Casey Robinson writes the screenplay from the story by Frank S Nugent and Curtis Kenyon.
Two Flags West also features Harry Von Zell, Johnny Sands, Arthur Hunnicutt, Jack Lee, Robert Adler, Harry Carter, Ferris Taylor, Sally Corner, Everett Glass, Marjorie Bennett, Aurora Castillôn, Roy Gordon, Stanley Andrews, Don Garner, James P Spencer, Lee MacGregor and Donald Curtis.
